Breville Barista Express: first-week problems and how to fix them

Buy the Barista Express if you want to learn to make espresso by hand and don’t own a grinder. Its grinder measures coffee by time, not weight, so the amount changes when you change the grind. Buy a coffee scale with it.

The one fact that matters most: the grinder runs for a set time, not until it reaches a weight. CoffeeGeek found each click of the dose dial can change the dose by as much as 3 grams. CoffeeGeek Breville’s own manual tells you to change the amount when you change the grind. Breville manual So a scale is the first thing to buy.

Fix it: your first-week problem

Most first-week trouble is the grind, the amount of coffee, or the beans, not a broken machine. Find what you see, then change one thing at a time.

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
Shot runs fast and pale, done in under 20 seconds. Tastes sour or watery.Grind too coarse, or too little coffee.Turn the GRIND SIZE dial to a lower number. Lower means finer. Weigh the coffee and aim for about 18 grams.
Breville manual
You turned the dial up and it got worse. The numbers run the other way from what many people expect.Go down in number to grind finer. Breville: “The smaller the number, the finer the grind size.”

At setting 1 and the shot is still too fast.Stale beans, or the dial has run out of range.First try fresh beans. One owner whose shots ran out in 5 to 7 seconds wrote that “it definitely was the beans.” If it is still fast, move the inner (upper) burr one step finer, as the manual shows. Coffee Kev says a new machine shouldn’t need it below 5.

Only drips come out, or almost nothing. Tastes bitter or burnt.Grind too fine, too much coffee, or both. This is called choking the machine.Grind coarser (a higher number) and use less coffee. “No espresso flowing” is first on Coffee Kev’s list of problems owners email him about.

Shot time looks right (about 25 to 30 seconds) but it still tastes sour. Not enough water through the coffee for these beans.Let more espresso into the cup. One owner’s advice: “Try 42g then 45g.” Also use filtered tap water. Breville says it does not recommend distilled water.
Breville manual · owner on Reddit
Shot time looks right but it tastes bitter.Too much water for these beans, often a dark roast.Stop the shot sooner. “The usual cure for ‘a little bitter’ is to reduce the yield,” one owner wrote. For dark roasts, another starts at 1 to 1.5: 18 grams in, 27 out.

Same settings, different shot every day.The grinder doses by time, so the amount changes. Old grounds left in the grinder also mix in after a grind change.Weigh the coffee after grinding, every time. After you change the grind, throw out a couple of seconds of grounds first.
CoffeeGeek · Reddit owners 1, 2
The pressure needle sits low, or only reaches the middle of the grey zone.Normal on newer machines. Coffee Kev lists a “9 bar OPV on current models,” a valve that caps the pressure. Older advice aimed higher on the dial.Ignore the needle. Judge by weight, time and taste. One 2026 owner says Breville support told them the needle now tops out at 12 o’clock.
Coffee Kev · owner on Reddit
Pressure builds slowly, or never.Usually the coffee. Sometimes scale, a worn seal, or a water filter that slows the flow.Test the machine: pull a shot with the dual-wall basket or the rubber cleaning disc. If pressure rises fast, the machine is fine and the coffee is the problem. If not, descale and check the seal around the shower screen.
Breville manual · Reddit owners 1, 2
The machine stops the shot at about 22 grams when you wanted 36.The 2 CUP button pours a set amount of water (about 2 oz), not a weight.Brew by hand: press and hold 2 CUP for the gentle start, let go, then press again when the scale reaches your target.

Thin shot with no crema, using pre-ground coffee.Wrong basket.Use the dual-wall (two-layer) basket with pre-ground coffee. Use the single-wall basket only with beans you grind fresh.
Breville manual
Grinder clicks and won’t grind.A safety clutch is slipping. Coffee Kev says some dense, lighter-roast beans can set it off.Grind a little coarser, or switch to an espresso blend. It protects the grinder; it is not a fault.

Milk comes out hot but flat, with no foam. The steam tip is too deep, so no air gets in.Keep the tip just under the surface until the milk spins. Then slowly lower the jug so the tip reaches the surface and pulls in air. Stop at 140–149°F, when the jug is hot to touch.
Breville manual · owner on Reddit
The first shot of the day is sour even with good settings. The portafilter is still cold. Breville says a cold portafilter and basket can lower the brew temperature enough to hurt the shot.Heat the portafilter and basket with hot water from the hot water outlet before the first shot, as Breville says. You don’t need a long warm-up: testers measured 30 to 48 seconds to ready.

Grinder, water, pressure and leak problems

These are the problems owners search for most. Each starts with the most likely cause and fix. Most come from the troubleshooting table in Breville’s manual.

Grinder not grinding

Most likely the bean hopper is empty or not locked on, or the grinder chute is blocked.

  • Add fresh beans and lock the hopper on. If the filter size lights flash, Breville says to remove the hopper, check for debris and lock it back on.
  • If no grounds come out, clean and clear the grinder chamber and chute, as the manual shows.
  • If water or moisture got in, dry the burrs fully before you put them back. Breville says a hair dryer can help.
  • If it clicks but won’t turn, the safety clutch is slipping. Grind a little coarser or switch to an espresso blend.

Breville manual · Coffee Kev

Grinder jammed or making a loud noise

Most likely something is stuck in the burrs. Unplug the machine before you reach in.

  • Remove the hopper and check for debris or a stone. Then clear the grinder chamber and chute.
  • Don’t grind green or under-roasted beans. Breville says they are too dense and can damage or break the burrs.
  • If the whole machine stopped while grinding, its safety cut-out may have tripped from heat. Turn it off, unplug it, and let it cool for 30 to 60 minutes.

Breville manual

No water coming out

Most likely the water tank isn’t locked in, or the coffee is packed so tight that water can’t get through.

  • Check the tank has water and is pushed all the way down until it locks.
  • Wait until the POWER light stops flashing and the buttons light up. Water won’t flow before the machine is hot.
  • Run water with no coffee in the basket. If it flows, the coffee is the problem: grind coarser, use less, and don’t tamp as hard.
  • Clear blocked basket holes with the pin on the cleaning tool.
  • If no water comes out even with an empty basket, descale it. Mineral buildup can block the water.

Breville manual · video

Pressure gauge not moving

If the needle doesn’t move and espresso gushes out, the coffee is too coarse or there’s too little of it. Grind finer and use more.

  • Breville’s fix when espresso runs out too quickly: a finer grind, more coffee, and a firm tamp.
  • Test the machine itself: pull a shot with the dual-wall basket or the rubber cleaning disc. If the needle rises fast, the machine is fine and the coffee was the problem.
  • If the needle rises but stops around the middle of the grey zone, that is normal on newer machines. A valve caps the pressure lower than older advice expects.
  • If no water comes out at all, see No water coming out.

Breville manual · Coffee Kev · Reddit owners 1, 2, 3

Leaking water

First find where the water is. Water in or under the drip tray right after a shot is usually normal: the machine flushes water into the tray after each shot, hot water and steam.

  • Push the drip tray in firmly and empty it when the Empty Me! sign shows.
  • Water or coffee around the handle: lock the portafilter in until you feel resistance, wipe grounds off the basket rim, and use a little less coffee.
  • Still leaking around the handle? The silicone seal around the shower screen wears out and needs replacing. The manual shows how, with the Allen key in the box.
  • Also check the water tank is locked all the way down.

Breville manual

Espresso too slow, or only drips

Most likely the grind is too fine or there’s too much coffee. Grind coarser (a higher number) and use less.

  • Tamp firmly, but not with your full weight. Breville lists “coffee tamped too firmly” as a cause.
  • Breville’s older manual flags shots that take more than 40 seconds. Aim for 25 to 30.
  • If the basket holes are blocked, clear them with the pin on the cleaning tool.

Breville manual · older Breville manual

Your first shot

Before your first shot, run water through the machine with no coffee. Then start at grind 5 with about 18 grams of coffee.

  • Soak the water filter for 5 minutes, put it in the tank, and fill the tank.
  • When the machine is ready, run water through the group head, the steam wand and the hot water outlet. Breville says to repeat until the tank is empty.
  • Aim for about 36 grams of espresso in 25 to 30 seconds. Then adjust one thing at a time.
  • Use fresh beans. Breville says to use them 5 to 20 days after the roast date.
  • Plan on some time: Tech Gear Lab’s first setup took 35 minutes.

Breville’s two manuals disagree

Breville has printed at least two US instruction books for this machine, and their numbers differ. Both are online. If your box has the older one, these are the differences.

Current book (X26)Older book (F16, 2016)

Both books say to start the grind at 5. Reviewers disagree too. Breville says the grinder has 16 settings; Breville Coffee Kev writes 18. Coffee Kev Your dial shows the real number.

The pressure gauge advice changed over time. Lifestyle Lab wrote in 2020–21 that “the best shots are actually pulled from 12 o’clock and onward on the dial.” Lifestyle Lab Newer machines cap the pressure lower, Coffee Kev so on a new machine the needle may never get that high.

What to buy with it

Start with a scale. Next, a tamper that fits the basket better than the one in the box. The machine already comes with a milk jug, a dosing funnel, both kinds of baskets, a cleaning disc and a first water filter. Breville manual

Who should not buy it

Questions owners ask

Is everyone really wasting 60 grams of coffee per bag just to dial in?

At first, many people do. You waste less once you know which way to turn the dial. Owners suggest buying bigger bags while you learn, and writing down what worked for each bag. owner on Reddit

When is the grind too fine?

When the shot only drips or stops before your target weight. Remember that lower numbers are finer. owner on Reddit

Why does my shot stop at 22 grams?

The 2 CUP button pours a set amount. Hold the button to brew by hand and stop at your target weight, or reprogram the button. Breville manual

My pressure needle barely reaches the grey zone. Is it broken?

Probably not. Newer machines have a valve that caps the pressure lower, so the needle sits lower than older advice says. owner on Reddit Judge by weight, time and taste.

My espresso is sour even at 18 grams in, 36 out, in 25 to 30 seconds. Now what?

Let more espresso into the cup, about 42 to 45 grams. owner on Reddit If you use distilled water, switch to filtered tap water. Breville manual

Do I need to warm it up for 20 minutes?

No. Testers measured 30 to 48 seconds to ready. America’s Test Kitchen One owner points out that long warm-ups don’t help this kind of heater. owner on Reddit Heat the portafilter with hot water before the first shot. Breville manual

Why is no water coming out of my Barista Express?

Most often the water tank isn’t locked in, or the coffee is ground too fine or packed too tight. Push the tank down until it locks, then run water with an empty basket. If nothing flows even then, descale it. Breville manual

Why is my Barista Express grinder not grinding?

Check that the hopper has beans and is locked on. If it still won’t grind, the chute is likely blocked: unplug it and clear the grinder chamber and chute. Breville manual

Why is my Barista Express leaking?

Water in the drip tray after a shot is normal, because the machine flushes water there. Water around the handle usually means grounds on the basket rim, too much coffee, or a worn seal around the shower screen. Breville manual

Barista Express or Bambino Plus?

Barista Express if you don’t own a grinder. Bambino Plus if you have a grinder and want the milk steamed for you. See our comparison.

How we built this page

We read Breville’s two US instruction books, the Tech Gear Lab and America’s Test Kitchen tests, CoffeeGeek, Homes & Gardens, Coffee Kev and Lifestyle Lab, and owner threads on Reddit’s r/espresso.
