Why the Impress wins

What the Barista Express does better: it costs less, it is a little shorter, and it uses a standard hand tamper, so you learn every step yourself. It has been sold for years, so there is far more owner help online.

What reviewers said

“The biggest variation we found between doses was 0.2g.”

Home Coffee Expert on the Barista Express Impress, July 2026 · read the review

“Once the machine had adapted to our dose after a few shots, we were consistently hitting 25-second extractions.”

“What I like less is the grinder timer dial. In 2024, a timer dial that jumps 1-2 seconds per click isn’t acceptable any longer. That can result in as much as 3g differences in doses.”

CoffeeGeek on the Barista Express · read the review

“There was only about a gram of variance between the various coffee grinds that I asked the Barista Express for.”

What’s the same

Inside, these are close cousins. You get the same espresso hardware and the same milk work on both.

Both make you steam milk by hand. On the Impress, Home Coffee Expert timed 15 to 20 seconds for the wand to heat up after a shot, and BrewCoffeeHome said steaming takes almost a minute per drink.

“It takes almost a minute to steam for one drink.”

You want café-style espresso from whole beans, and you’d rather not fight the dose and tamp every morning. You’re fine steaming milk by hand.

Questions people ask

Is the Impress worth the extra money?

For most people, yes. It takes care of the hardest part for a beginner: getting the same amount of coffee in the basket, pressed the same way, every time. If you want to learn those steps by hand, or the price gap is big, get the Barista Express and a scale.

Do I still need a scale with the Impress?

Less than with the Barista Express. Home Coffee Expert found its doses within 0.2 grams of each other. A scale still helps you weigh the espresso that comes out.

Does the Impress come with a tamper?

No hand tamper. It has a lever on the side that presses the coffee down for you.

Is the milk any easier on the Impress?

No. Both have the same hand steam wand, so you texture the milk yourself. If you want the milk done for you, look at the Ninja Luxe Café or the Bambino Plus.
